ABSTRACT

Abstract This study was conducted to estimate the diversity and the occurrence of commercially important finfish species collected by twenty fish sampling site of Sindh and Baluchistan coasts of the Arabian Sea in Pakistan from January to December 2019. Additionally, physicochemical characteristics of seawater were analyzed from these selected sites and found to be within suitable ranges required for fish growth and survive. A total of 81287 fish individuals were collected and identified as 49 species belonging to 26 families in our study. The most diversified family was Sparidae (13 species) followed by Carangidae and Lutjanidae (4 species), Mullidae, Serranidae, Ariidae (3 species), and Sciaenidae (2 species). The remaining 20 families were represented by only one species. The values of Shannon diversity index calculated for the four selected habitats revealed that high fish diversity was reported at Sonmiani Coast (H'=1.81), while less at Ormara Coast (H'=0.23). Likewise, Evenness index (E) was high at Sonmiani Coast (E=0.50) and less fish diversity was reported at Ormara Coast (E=0.06). Reducing risks to threatened marine species in coastal habitats also requires conservation actions at multiple scales. Thus, it was concluded that our study could be valuable in providing the more information's regarding to the diversity of finfish species and their occurrence along the Pakistan Coast. Further, to better understand the effects, regular monitoring and conservation measures should be taken to mitigate the influence of anthropogenic activities and protect finfish diversity from further decline

ABSTRACT

Pest insects are one of the major factors affecting the productivity of sugarcane, and especially those associated with the soil, which damage the crop if not controlled. There is little information on the insect associated with the soil in the sugarcane crop in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This study evaluated the occurrence, abundance and population variation of soil-associated insects in sugarcane crops in four counties in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul during a period from September 2009 to August 2010. For the capture of insects, deep in the soil trenches were (50 x 50 x 30 width x length x depth). It was observed that county of Maracaju has a high incidence of soil insects in sugarcane crop. Specimens of the family Scarabaeidae are abundant in sugarcane fields of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, being Liogenys suturalis the predominant species. Soil insects of the Chrysomelidae family were found with greater abundance in Dourados and Naviraí while Noctuidae, represented only by the Hyponeuma taltula, occurred mainly in Dourados. Insects of the family Termitidae occur in sugarcane fields in the counties of Maracaju and Naviraí but not in Nova Alvorada do Sul and Dourados. Sphenophorus levis and Metamasius hemipterus were alsoreported in the sugarcane fields from Maracaju, being the occurrence these species the first record in the Mato Grosso do Sul State. The determined occurrence of different soil insects in the sugarcane fields may help in their management in the four counties studied.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the effects of sclerostin (SOST) and WNT/CTNNB1 signaling pathway on the cell cycle, migration and invasion of human uveal melanoma (UM) cells and its related mechanism. Methods:UM tissues from 20 cases of epithelioid UM and 16 cases of spindle cell type UM were collected. The contents of SOST, Wnt-1 and Catenin beta-1 proteins in the collected tissues were detected by immunohistochemical staining.Three human UM tissue derived cell lines OCM-1 (primary spindle cell type), Mum-2B (metastatic epithelioid) and Mum-2C (metastatic spindle cell type) were selected and divided into three groups, blank control group not transfected, empty vector group transfected with SOST negative control vector and SOST siRNA group transfected with SOST siRNA.After 24-hour transfection, the mRNA and protein expression levels of SOST, CTNNB1, WNT protein family 1 (WNT1), CCND1, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)2 and MMP9 were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR and Western blot, respectively. The invasion and migration ability of the transfected cells were measured by transwell method, and the cell cycle distribution was detected by flow cytometry.Another 9 female BALB/c nude mice were selected and randomized into OCM-1 group, OCM-1 empty vector group and SOST shRNA group, inoculated with OCM-1 without lentivirus infection, OCM-1 with blank lentivirus infection and OCM-1 with SOST shRNA lentivirus infection, respectively.Six weeks after inoculation, the in situ formation of tumor was observed. The interaction between SOST and low density lipoprotein receptor related protein(LRP)-5/6 in OCM-1 cells was explored by co-immunoprecipitation assay. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital (2018KY[L]-20).Results:Immunohistochemical staining results showed that the SOST expression level was higher and the expression levels of Wnt-1 and Catenin beta-1 were lower in spindle cell type UM tissues than in epithelioid UM tissues, and the differences were all statistically significant (all at P<0.01). The real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR results showed that the relative expression of SOST mRNA was significantly lower and the relative expressions of CCND1, WNT1 and MMP9 mRNA were significantly higher in SOST siRNA groups than in corresponding empty vector groups in the three cell lines (all at P<0.05). In OCM-1 and Mum-2C cell lines, the relative expressions of CTNNB1 mRNA were significantly higher in SOST siRNA groups than in empty vector groups (all at P<0.01). Western blot results showed that the relative expression of SOST protein was significantly lower and the relative expressions of Wnt-1, Catenin beta-1, cyclin-D1, MMP2 and MMP9 proteins were significantly higher in SOST siRNA groups than in empty vector groups (all at P<0.01). Transwell assay showed that the cell invasion and migration ability of SOST siRNA group was significantly higher than that of blank control group and empty vector group in the three cell lines (all at P<0.01). Flow cytometry showed that the proportion of G1-phase cells and the G1/S-phase ratio were significantly lower in SOST siRNA group than in blank control groups and empty vector groups (all at P<0.01). The eyeball volume of OCM-1 group, OCM-1 empty vector group and SOST shRNA group was (42.7±4.6), (49.0±22.9) and (135.2±32.7)mm 3, respectively, showing a significant overall difference ( F=19.963, P<0.01). The eyeball volume of SOST shRNA group was larger than that of OCM-1 group and OCM-1 empty vector group, and the differences were statistically significant (both at P<0.05). Co-immunoprecipitation results showed that SOST could interact with LRP-5 and LRP-6 by binding to them, respectively. Conclusions:Silencing SOST can promote the invasion and migration of UM cells, and increase the proportion of UM cells in the division phase.Silencing SOST can promote tumor growth in eyes of nude mice.SOST may play this function by interacting with the membrane receptor LRP-5/LRP-6 and then regulating the WNT/CTNNB1 signal pathway.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the female reproductive system with a high incidence rate and is one of the main causes of cancer-related deaths in women. Modern research believes that pregnancy, breastfeeding, and other reproductive behaviors can cause the changes in the levels of female estrogen and progesterone and related receptors, and affect the morphology and function of breast tissue, which are associated with the occurrence of breast cancer. This paper aims to summarize the impact of breastfeeding on the occurrence of breast cancer and analyze their correlation to increase the maternal breastfeeding rate, reduce the occurrence of breast cancer, and lower the risk of breast cancer in women.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#This study investigated trends in the study of phytochemical treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).@*METHODS@#The Web of Science database (2007-2022) was searched using the search terms "phytochemicals" and "PTSD," and relevant literature was compiled. Network clustering co-occurrence analysis and qualitative narrative review were conducted.@*RESULTS@#Three hundred and one articles were included in the analysis of published research, which has surged since 2015 with nearly half of all relevant articles coming from North America. The category is dominated by neuroscience and neurology, with two journals, Addictive Behaviors and Drug and Alcohol Dependence, publishing the greatest number of papers on these topics. Most studies focused on psychedelic intervention for PTSD. Three timelines show an "ebb and flow" phenomenon between "substance use/marijuana abuse" and "psychedelic medicine/medicinal cannabis." Other phytochemicals account for a small proportion of the research and focus on topics like neurosteroid turnover, serotonin levels, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression.@*CONCLUSION@#Research on phytochemicals and PTSD is unevenly distributed across countries/regions, disciplines, and journals. Since 2015, the research paradigm shifted to constitute the mainstream of psychedelic research thus far, leading to the exploration of botanical active ingredients and molecular mechanisms. Other studies focus on anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammation. Please cite this article as: Gao B, Qu YC, Cai MY, Zhang YY, Lu HT, Li HX, Tang YX, Shen H. ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the characteristics and correlations of vaginal flora in women with cervical lesions. Methods: A total of 132 women, including 41 women diagnosed with normal cervical (NC), 39 patients with low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 1), 37 patients with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2/3) and 15 patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), who came from the gynecological clinic of Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University during January 2018 to June 2018, were enrolled in this study according to the inclusive and exclusive criteria strictly. The vaginal flora was detected by 16S rDNA sequencing technology. Co-occurrence network analysis was used to investigate the Spearman correlations between different genera of bacteria. Results: The dominant bacteria in NC, CIN 1 and CIN 2/3 groups were Lactobacillus [constituent ratios 79.4% (1 869 598/2 354 098), 63.6% (1 536 466/2 415 100) and 58.3% (1 342 896/2 301 536), respectively], while Peptophilus [20.4% (246 072/1 205 154) ] was the dominant bacteria in SCC group. With the aggravation of cervical lesions, the diversity of vaginal flora gradually increased (Shannon index: F=6.39, P=0.001; Simpson index: F=3.95, P=0.012). During the cervical lesion progress, the ratio of Lactobacillus gradually decreased, the ratio of other anaerobes such as Peptophilus, Sneathia, Prevotella and etc. gradually increased, and the differential bacteria (LDA score >3.5) gradually evolved from Lactobacillus to other anaerobes. The top 10 relative abundance bacteria, spearman correlation coefficient>0.4 and P<0.05 were selected. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that Prevotella, Peptophilus, Porphyrinomonas, Anaerococcus, Sneathia, Atopobium, Gardnerella and Streptococcus were positively correlated in different stages of cervical lesions, while Lactobacillus was negatively correlated with the above anaerobes. It was found that the relationship between vaginal floras in CIN 1 group was the most complex and only Peptophilus was significantly negatively correlated with Lactobacillus in SCC group. Conclusions: The increased diversity and changed correlations between vaginal floras are closely related to cervical lesions. Peptophilus is of great significance in the diagnosis, prediction and early warning of cervical carcinogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Myopia has become a major public health problem affecting the eye health of our nationals, especially adolescents, and is listed as one of the three major diseases in the world. The etiology of myopia is complex and it is currently considered to be mainly related to environmental factors and genetic factors. Dietary factors are less concerned, but it has been reported that there is a correlation between high-sugar diet and the occurrence and development of myopia. Studies have found that high-sugar diet can cause hyperinsulinemia, which mediates the increase of retinal insulin-like growth factor(IGF-1, IGF-2)expression level, and the decrease of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3(IGFBP-3)expression level in scleral fibroblasts, thereby activating signal transduction and transcriptional activator protein 3(STAT3)signaling pathway, and then acting on scleral matrix metalloproteinases(MMP)/transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β)and other factors, resulting in a decrease in scleral extracellular matrix(ECM), eventually leading to scleral remodeling, eye axis growth and myopia. This article explores the relationship between high-sugar diet and the occurrence and development of myopia from the aspects of epidemiology and biological mechanisms by consulting relevant literature, and provides research directions for the prevention and control of myopia.

ABSTRACT

@#Aflatoxins are ubiquitous and occur in food. Exposure to aflatoxins seriously impact the health of human and animal. It is concerning especially when aflatoxins are odourless, colourless, and tasteless that hardly be detected through naked eyes. Ingestion of aflatoxin-contaminated food contributes the major route of exposure. The present review is an update on the aflatoxin occurrence in food, aflatoxin regulations in food, and recent risk assessment of aflatoxin exposure in Malaysia. Peanuts and chili were more prone to aflatoxin contamination in Malaysia. The extreme weather experienced in Malaysia and global climatic change may worsen the aflatoxin contamination in food. The regulatory standards for aflatoxins imposed by Malaysia are less stringent than developed countries. The dietary exposure of aflatoxins among Malaysian was relatively high as compared with other Asia countries, ranging from 0.002 to 34.00 ng/kg body weight/day. Nonetheless, Malaysian population had low risk of aflatoxin-related liver cancer, with an estimated liver cancer risk of <1 cancer case/100,000 population/year.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of thyroid nodules (TN) among people undergoing physical examination in Taiyuan City, and evaluate the impact of hyperuricemia (HUA) on the risk of TN.Methods:Using a prospective design, a total of 42 966 people who underwent routine physical examination at Shanxi Shangning Health Examination Center from October 2020 to October 2021 were selected as subjects and divided into the HUA group ( n = 7 235) and the non-HUA group ( n = 35 731) based on the serum uric acid levels. The propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to balance the confounding factors between groups, and logistic regression was used to analyze the impact of HUA on the risk of TN. Results:The total detection rate of TN in the physical examination population was 55.6% (23 907/42 966). The detection rate of TN in females [61.0% (15 011/24 618)] was higher than that in males [48.5% (8 896/18 348)], and the difference was statistically significant (χ 2 = 664.55, P < 0.001). A total of 2 438 pairs of matching data were obtained after PSM, and the distribution of confounding factors in HUA and non-HUA groups reached equilibrium (the absolute values of standardized differences < 0.10). Logistic regression analysis before PSM showed that HUA was a protective factor for the incidence of TN in general population and males [odds ratio ( OR) = 0.696, 0.817, 95% confidence interval ( CI): 0.661 - 0.732, 0.768 - 0.868], while HUA was a risk factor for the incidence of TN in females ( OR = 1.370, 95% CI: 1.192 - 1.574). After PSM, HUA was not a influencing factor for the incidence of TN in general population and males ( P > 0.05), but it was still a risk factor in females for the onset of TN ( OR = 1.373, 95% CI: 1.014 - 1.858). Conclusion:In the physical examination population in Taiyuan City, HUA is an independent risk factor for TN in females.

ABSTRACT

Background: ‘Frailty’ has no consensual definition till date, although the term occupies a pivotal role in geriatric medicine. A bibliometric analysis of the literature serves to capture the keyword cooccurrences and linkages, co-citations, author collaborations, research trends and to present the extant research in a nutshell. Objective: To explore the usage of frailty, its domains in medical research and the evolution of the term to other disciplines through systematic mapping by bibliometric analysis. Methods: Literature search was done in the Scopus database using a pre-formed search strategy. 2629 documents were retrieved. Co-occurrence citation analysis using keywords and link strength was obtained using the VOSviewer ver.1.6.16. A three-field plot was constructed using ‘biblioshiny’ package of the R-studio to identify the various domains of frailty. Descriptive statistics were applied to identify the trends in frailty research, number of contributions from countries, fields of research involving frailty. Results: Total of 3739 publications were observed, with the USA having most number of contributions (740, 20%) as single country, while India has only 19 contributions (0.5%) in the past 20 years. As a region, Europe and Central Asia contributed to the maximum (1714, 46.4%), most of them being from the high-income countries. Research on frailty has steadily increased over the past two decades, with most of the researches being conducted in the fields of Medicine, Biochemistry and Genetics. Cooccurrence citations and three-field plots indicate the evolving usage of frailty in other domains, such as cognition, mental health, indicators of survival, risk assessment, mortality, and quality of life. Conclusion: Upon exploring frailty, it also makes one wonder if frailty could be the cause for what is known as death due to ‘natural causes’ or ‘old age’. The implementation of extension codes in the ICD-11 related to ‘Ageing’ (XT9T) and ‘Old Age’ (MG2A), paves way for researchers to further explore ‘frailty’ as a cause of mortality.

ABSTRACT

Myxosporidiosis is an infectious disease caused by myxozoans of the Phylum Cnidaria, Class Myxosporea, and Order Bivalvulida, considered a common parasite in fresh and saltwater fishes that parasitize many organs, especially gills. In the present study, 49 specimens of fishes belonging to eight genera: Tetragonopterus, Leporinus, Myleus, Pirinampus, Rhapiodon, Pygocentrus, Ageneiosus, and Serrasalmus were collected and blood smears were made, fixed with absolute methanol, and stained with Giemsa 10% to survey hemoparasites. However, myxospores were found in the circulating blood of five (10.20%) fishes belonging to genus Tetragonopterus, Myleus, and Pygocentrus. Two morphological types of Myxobolus spp. were identified in all the five fish specimens analyzed. Usually, investigations on myxozoans in fish are carried out with the search for plasmodia or cysts in the fish organs and observation of the cavity of organs. Nevertheless, this study highlights the importance of also examining the blood of these animals, since these parasites can cause severe pathogenic diseases in fish.

ABSTRACT

Background Certain metabolites are closely related to the occurrence and development of pulmonary fibrosis, and the related mechanism has not been fully elucidated. It is necessary to explore the trends of various metabolites and causes of pulmonary fibrosis. Objective To discuss the trends of publication and research hotspots of pulmonary fibrosis-related metabolites by bibliometrics. Methods With "pulmonary fibrosis" and "metabolites" in both Chinese and English as primary keywords, literature search was conducted through public online databases: PubMed, Web of Science, SinoMed, and CNKI. NoteExpress 3.0 and Excel 2019 were used to store and organize the collected literature. Analyses included publication year, number of papers, institution, country/region, and journal title. VOSviewer 1.6.10 was used for visual analysis. Keyword co-occurrence was analyzed by setting the minimum threshold for the occurrence of keywords to 5 times. Results The research on pulmonary fibrosis and associated metabolites in foreign language was earlier than that in Chinese language. Since the 1990s, the number of literature showed an increasing trend in both foreign and Chinese language literature. A total of 1 062 articles were published in foreign languages, of which 864 articles contained the authors’ address information. The authors in the United States published 340 articles, followed by China with 196 articles, and then Japan, Germany, and Italy. There were 728 relevant pieces of literature published in Chinese, 709 of which included the authors’ institution information and 350 institutions were involved. North China University of Science and Technology, Shanxi Medical University, Peking University, Zhengzhou University, China Medical University, and Soochow University were the top 6 by number of publication. A total of 255 Chinese journals published 728 Chinese articles, and among them 242 articles (33.24%) were published by 12 journals having published more than ten articles per journal. A total of 1062 articles were published in 609 foreign language journals, and among them 179 articles (16.85%) were published by 8 journals with more than 15 articles published by each journal. The results of keywords co-occurrence analysis suggested that pulmonary fibrosis in association with glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, and biological oxidation were the common themes studied at home and abroad. Conclusion The number of publications on pulmonary fibrosis and metabolites has been on the rise in recent years, and the research hotspots include glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, and biological oxidation.

Thus, the blood analyses can proportionate preventive sanitary control for commercial fish avoiding economic loss.
